Comfort and the Golden Ratio

Golden Ratio
Golden Ratio

As a reward to myself for finishing my Homegrown collection, I bought myself a necklace.  The pendant is of the Golden ratio. Have you seen this before?  Since I learned about the golden ratio I’ve been fascinated, and this was before I started painting. Since I’ve painted it’s taken on a greater meaning to me.  So when I wanted to mark this accomplishment I thought what better way than by buying a golden ratio pendant that will always remind me of this.

You see, when I was painting the watermelon in this collection I had noticed spirals in the flesh of it. I had never really paid that close attention to a watermelon before, but when you paint you have to be observant.  So when I researched if watermelon spirals are a part of the golden ratio, it seems they are.  In fact this ratio or sequence is all around us in the natural world. If you want to see for yourself look at the way the scales on a pineapple grow, the seeds on a sunflower or the scales on a pine cone. The petals on a flower also are in this sequence and so is the shell of a snail.

Artists like to use this ratio or angle in the composition of their art as our eyes find it very pleasing to look at. That’s another reason I find it fascinating. There are also many example of this ratio in the human body.

For me to try and explain it in a simple way is difficult but I encourage you to google it and see for yourself. For me it shows such order and design in our  natural world which I find comforting, especially this year where we have seen so many changes.  So when I look at my pendant it reminds me of the things I can count on, that are constant and consistent.

1 Response to Comfort and the Golden Ratio

Hey Laurinda, this email unfortunately got added to my junk list, but luckily I was just checking and read about the fascinating golden spiral, this is so interesting and something I was not aware of! Hmmmm I guess it's not the only thing 😂 what a wonderful story and I love the relationship to your art that always pulls me in, now I know why, it really is a lovely necklace that you've found and so nice to wear such important symbolism daily! I have a similar story about the saying Que sera sera, which you know is an old song from Doris Day which I sang all the time as a small child, I remember belting out que sirlaw sirlaw, what ever will be will be the puture is all to see que sirlaw sirlaw, not knowing I had the words wrong as a five year old but for some reason the song stayed with me and I always believed What will be will be... so I decided I would get a tattoo one day but I'm not really a fan of them and being undecided on the script or placement, I put it off... so to make a long story longer🤪my hubby bought me a necklace for Christmas with a silver medallion and guess what I've decided to get engraved on it.. better than my body I guess😊...So my connection to the art scene and this saying are just that....que sera sera😉❤️
